First China Germany Langfang Friendship Festival

On 23 October I was invited along with Daniel (our Rotary President) and others to a presentation of the new Development Zone in Langfang. The same evening we joined a genuine German Oktoberfest. Food came from Drei Kronen (Beijing), music by the German group “Iggy Stone & Alpenrocker”. The group tours China and knows how to excite the Chinese crowd. Our Greek friend Emmanuel also joined and we had a great time drinking, eating and dancing.

It was interesting to see the enthusiasm of our Chinese friends who apparently enjoyed it all. Some girls joinded the drinking competition an “stood their man”…
We stayed in the nice Ovation Hotel (said to be the best in Langfang). When leaving we saw a taichi demonstration…

The 6th Chongyang Festival in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse

The Double Ninth Festival, also called Chongyang Festival, is the official day to pay respect to the seniors (in China that is, over 60). This year the date fell on 21 October 2015.
The first four China International Chongyang Festivals were successfully organized and held in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012; due to budget restrictions and the call for saving money, 2013 was not held. I am in the Organizing Committee since the first one. Like last year, the event took place in Diaoyutai, on 31 October.
It was hosted as usual by the Managing Committee of China Aging International Development Foundation, where I also have a position.
This year the Pakistan Ambassador took part for the diplomatic corps, and gave a speech.
I invited several foreign “senior” citizens and organized a bus from our residence to the Guesthouse. Many of my friends attended: Renaat & Susan, Regula, Marcel. Jan, Harvey, Jo, Michael, Mark & Fu Han, Emile, François … Nice to have them all.
Ms. Peng Peiyun was again the highest invited guest from the government; she is Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, the Chairwoman of the All-China Women’s Federation, and President of the Red Cross Society of China.

This time I gave my speech in English, as representative of the foreign seniors.
As always the performances by the senior citizens’ perfomers were impressive and charmed the audience. See the pictures!

Pictured also is Mrs. Wanbi Epstein, the widow of Israel Epstein who kindly gave me a signed copy of his book “From Opium War to Liberation”.

Last Beijing Rotaract meeting for November

On Monday 30 November, the last meeting of the month for Rotaract, as usual in The Bookworm.

Again, high turnout and people from all over the world!

FAMMM is back! In Al Bar (Italian Center)

Christian launched another comeback with his FAMMM event, this time in Al Bar within the Italian Center on Xindong Street. Yes there is a door fee now (100 RMB) but I think it only improves the quality of the guests…

I always the parties as there is a nice mix of people, including a range of impressive girls (and for the girls: some handsome boys!).
I did not take too many pictures, just busy talking…
Looking forward to the next party.

Rotary and Rotaract: lunches, meetings, Art Jam, busy!

For our Rotary lunch in Kempinski Hotel on 24 November we had as speaker Mr. Anthony Kuhn, China Correspondent for National Public Radio (USA).
He is a real China veteran (and is obviously welcome to our Old China Hands Lunch!) and as such gave an interesting and personal insight into cultural aspects of China today.

Thanks to Celine and our Rotaractors for some of the pics.
Rotaract had a full house during the 23 November meeting in The Bookworm. Due to its success the question is where to go in the future for our meetings as attendance is increasing. A nice problem to have. We had Rotaractors from China, Belgium, Moldova, Romania, USA, Germany, France, Kazakhstan, …
I also made a small contribution for the Art Jam on 28 November.
And yes, Art Jam was a success, held at Crossroads Beijing, an event where participants can get creative on a canvas, while also giving to charity. It supported the China Women’s Film Festival, organized to raise awareness for violence against women and discrimination over diverse sexual orientation. The pictures talk for the success! Creativity, smiles….
Location was: Crossroads Centre, 18 Da Shiqiao Hutong, Jiu Gulou Dajie, Xicheng District, Beijing.
